Charlie is a native of Bertie County North Carolina and
grew up on the family farm in Lewiston-Woodville. He grew
up in Grace Episcopal Church, Woodville. He is a 1964 graduate
of North Carolina State University with a B.S. in Industrial
Engineering. He entered the Air Force pilot training program
after graduation and served as an Aircraft Commander (C-141)
until 1970. He served in Southeast Asia (Vietnam), Europe,
North and South America.
He joined Sonoco in Hartsville South Carolina in 1970.
Sonoco is a Fortune 500 paper and packaging company. He
has extensive General Management experience/expertise in
new business development internationally and domestically,
most recently in China, strategic location of manufacturing
sites, joint ventures, start up operations, multi-site manufacturing
and marketing. He was appointed General Manager-Industrial
Products Division, China and Taiwan, in 1996 and served
in this role until his retirement from Sonoco in 1999 (29
years). His Mainland China office and residence was in Shanghai.
Charlie and his family lived in Hartsville for 23 years,
where they were members of Saint Bartholomews Episcopal
Church. While a member of Saint Bartholomews he served
several terms on the vestry, headed up Stewardship Campaigns,
was Chairman of their Search Committee when a new rector
was hired and served three years as Senior warden.
Charlie and his wife, Marcia, moved to Washington in September
1999. He started a new business in Chapel Hill, NC in August
1999 with two business partners from the Chapel Hill area.
The business Grantham, Griffin & Buck, (Retained Executive
Search Firm), has offices in Chapel Hill, however Charlie
does much of his work from a home office in Washington.
He currently serves on the Board of Directors of: Washington
Yacht and Country Club, Washington Rotary Club and Pamlico
Plantation Property Owners Association.
